A desk is really three jobs: emptying it, getting it through the door and deciding whether it can be used again. Standing desks, L-shapes and glass tops each change the order.
Empty every drawer, unplug and lower any standing desk, then remove the top from the frame and bag the fixings. Offer solid or electric desks that still work for resale or donation. Book a bulky-furniture collection for swollen particleboard, broken frames and cracked glass tops instead of leaving them in a corridor or chute room.
Knowing how to dispose of an old desk in Dubai mostly comes down to identifying what you have. A flat-pack study desk and a motorised sit-stand frame look similar from across a room, but one is light board held together by cam locks and the other is a steel frame with lifting columns, a control box and a tangle of cables underneath.
Check the underside first. Cam-lock discs and dowels mean flat-pack. A welded or bolted steel frame with a cable tray means a sit-stand or bench desk. A pedestal on castors usually comes away on its own, and a desk that seems oddly heavy for its size is often solid timber or a thick veneered board that should stay in one piece if it fits through the door.
One question people forget: whose desk is it? Home-office furniture supplied by an employer during remote working may still be a company asset with a tag or serial number. Ask HR or facilities before selling or discarding it, and return any keys for lockable pedestals with the desk rather than leaving them in a drawer.

Run the desk down to its lowest setting while it is still powered. Short columns keep the centre of gravity low and make the frame far easier to control once the top comes off. Then switch off at the wall, unplug the control box, handset and any monitor arm cables, and coil everything into the cable tray so nothing snags on a door frame.
The top is usually screwed to the frame from underneath. Remove the screws with two people present: one supports the top while the other works, because a large top can drop suddenly once the last fixing is out. The frame on its own is still heavy steel. Keep the columns, control box and handset together, since a working frame is a sellable item and a failed one needs an electrical route rather than general waste.
Do not try to open a motorised leg or cut through cabling to save space. Unplug the desk, keep the electrical parts attached to the frame and tell the buyer or collector whether the motors still work.
Particleboard holds its screws well the first time. Taking it apart widens the holes, and a desk that has lived near a balcony door or an air-conditioning drip often has swollen edges that crumble when a cam lock is turned. If the desk fits through the door and into the service lift whole, move it whole. Measure the lift car diagonally, not just its width.
If you do dismantle, put every screw, dowel and bracket in a labelled bag and tape it to the largest panel. For a desk being sold, photograph the assembly stages as you go; buyers are far more willing to take a flat-pack piece with its instructions and fixings than a pile of anonymous boards. A desk that is already sagging or split is finished and belongs in a furniture collection.
Working standing desks and solid timber desks sell steadily through second-hand marketplaces, especially at the start of the school year and after office relocations flood the market with cheaper laminate. Charities are pickier: most accept sturdy, clean furniture and turn away chipped laminate, swollen board and anything missing parts. Ask before you deliver rather than leaving a desk at the door.
Whatever is left should never be parked in a corridor, lobby or chute room while you wait for it to disappear. Tower management usually needs a service-lift booking and removal pass for furniture, and Dubai Municipality runs its own household bulky-waste collection for furniture. For a desk plus the chair, shelving and boxes that usually leave with it, a single measured collection is often simpler.
When asking for a quote, photograph the desk from below as well as the front. The frame and fixings tell a crew whether it can travel whole, which saves time on the day.

Keep them attached to the frame, tell the collector the desk is motorised and do not place the control box or cables in household rubbish. A recycler can then separate the steel and electrical parts properly.
Treat it as damaged glass and stop using it. Lift it off the frame with two people, keep it upright on edge and tape a blanket or cardboard over the chipped corner. Tell the collector about the damage, because toughened glass with an edge chip can shatter unexpectedly if it is knocked or twisted.
Only if the building or community has a named bulky-waste point and management confirms the desk may go there. Many towers do not allow furniture in bin rooms at all. Ask first, book the service lift, and use a municipal bulky-waste request or a private collection when there is no approved spot.
